ATP Atlanta - Isner v Matosevic
Isner, Matosevic and fourth seed Vasek Pospisil are the only seeds to have survived into the quarterfinals in a draw which was devastated by withdrawals even before main-draw play began.
This is Isner’s part of the season; he has finished in the top three of the US Open Series for the past three years, three of his career titles have come at US Open Series events – Atlanta once and Winston-Salem twice – as well as five of his nine career titles. Isner and Matosevic have played once before, in the second round of Madrid this year on the fast high-altitude clay, Isner winning a tight encounter 7-6(9), 6-7(5), 7-5. Matosevic is precisely the kind of opponent who can trip a top-seeded player up – and precisely the kind of player Isner needs to be beat if he is to record another strong US Open Series showing in the heartland of his season.
