WTA Stanford Open
The Stanford Classic could be the scene for a third gripping meeting between Williams and Ivanovic in 2014 – but with a draw this packed, there are no guarantees. Victoria Azarenka was the Stanford champion in 2010 and took a wildcard this year as the former world no. 1, now ranked no. 10 after a wrist injury which means she has only played five events in 2014, bids to rebuild her ranking.
Dominika Cibulkova, the defending champion in Stanford, made a stunning start to the season when she reached the Australian Open final, won Acapulco and made the semifinals of Miami. But things haven’t been going so well for Cibulkova since she lost the Kuala Lumpur final to Donna Vekic. Another top-ten player who has yet to capture a title in 2014, world no. 5 Agnieszka Radwanska has a bye in the second round where she will face either the USA’s Varvara Lepchenko or the talented young Caroline Garcia for a place in the quarterfinals.
